About the American Foundation for suicide Prevention
The Nebraska Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education, and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death. The Nebraska Chapter is dedicated to helping save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide in our state.
Programs & Services Offered
Research: On a National level, AFSP is the leading private funder of research around suicide. The Nebraska Chapter is proud to contribute to research funds and hosts an annual Research Connections event in which an AFSP funded researcher presents their study to the local community. Ultimately, research informs every program we offer and every step we take to help reduce the suicide rate in our state. For more about AFSP-funded research, go to afsp.org/research.
Prevention Education: To help combat the shortage of mental health care providers and access to mental health care resources in our state, AFSP Nebraska takes a public health approach to suicide prevention. All of our trainings are free of charge and volunteers can become facilitators to help provide resources statewide. Our trainings are diverse and cater to varying groups and populations. They are inclusive of suicide prevention basics, as well as support for those who have a loved one who is struggling. To learn more, go to afsp.org/education and afsp.org/lived-experience
Loss & Healing: Our Loss & Healing program supports those who have lost someone to suicide. Through peer-to-peer bereavement support, Survivors of Suicide Loss Day events, and our Grief Kits, the Nebraska Chapter connects with loss survivors daily. Additionally, while AFSP does not run support groups, we are grateful to fund and host training for suicide loss support group facilitators statewide. For more about our Loss & Healing program, go to afsp.org/loss
Advocacy: AFSP Nebraska is dedicated to advocating for the importance of legislation that supports mental health care and suicide prevention. Community members are AFSP Advocates and work to advocate for public policies that support our cause. For more on advocacy, go to afsp.org/advocacy
Out of the Darkness Walks: Out Community and Campus Out of the Darkness Walks exist to bring awareness to mental health and suicide prevention, and provide a community experience for folks who have been impacted by suicide. To learn more, go to afsp.org/walks.
