About Angels Among Us
Angels Among Us’ mission of providing financial and emotional support to pediatric cancer families living-in or being treated in Nebraska has been in action since 2006. Angels Among Us (AAU) works directly with Children’s Nebraska and Nebraska Medicine, the only two hospitals in Nebraska where children with cancer can be treated, for referrals. Financial assistance is the largest core program of Angels Among Us. Upon diagnosis, when a family applies for support, Angels Among Us looks at their household income to evaluate their financial need. Based on Federal Poverty Guidelines, the pediatric cancer families served qualify for one of two funding levels. Assistance is then provided monthly, on behalf of the family, directly to the creditor for the critical time of their child’s treatment. Often when a child is diagnosed there is an immediate job loss, or a parent will significantly reduce working hours to care for their sick child. Angels Among Us steps in to help alleviate the financial burden so a family can focus on what matters most—their sick child.

In additional to critical financial support, AAU offers various emotional support programs for the entire pediatric cancer family. These services are meant to build community among families, provide a support system to walk alongside them during their journey, and ensure all families know they do not walk alone.

There is Hope, Help & Monetary Relief.

Programs & Services Offered

  • Financial Assistance

    • Angels Among Us provides financial assistance for pediatric cancer families living-in or being treated in Nebraska. Families apply through the social work departments at Children’s Nebraska and Nebraska Medicine. Once approved, we provide families with a monthly amount based on our current two funding levels of $550 or $825 a month, for the duration of their critical treatment time. We pay creditors directly to ensure funds are used where intended and needed most. This is Angels Among Us’ core program and at the heart of the mission of the organization.

  • Emotional Support Services

    • Healing Hearts-

      • Angels Among Us offers two 8-week bereavement sessions a year in partnership with Collective for Hope. These grief counseling groups are meant to support families during a very difficult time and help them to not feel alone while navigating the loss. When session is not active, Angels Among Us hosts monthly dinners with these families to keep the connection and support active.

      • Periodically, virtual support groups will take place for caregivers to connect. These may be in partnership with other agencies we collaborate with, or perhaps a small group of families seeking such support. Angels Among Us simply serves as the facilitator to meet families where they’re at and provide support.

    • Family Events - Throughout the year, Angels Among Us provides many events catered to all members of the pediatric cancer family. Our largest Family Event is an annual overnight stay the Leid Lodge in Nebraska City. This is often a family’s only time away to enjoy a vacation of sorts and experience a sense of normalcy. In addition to the overnight, AAU hosts other events such as an Easter Egg Hunt, a Summer Picnic, opportunities for a Zoo Day, Trunk or Treat, and other activities. Another signature family outing is called AngelFlix. This event takes place in a movie theater that is shut down and professionally cleaned, we will bring in food and a craft and allow families to space out and see a popular new release. These family events happen in various communities throughout the year, and all are free of charge upon registration.

    • Women’s Recharge - This bi-monthly women’s caregiver program is an opportunity for respite and relaxation. Moms and caregivers have built a close community by knowing you’re surrounding by others who know exactly what you’re going through. These gatherings may have facilitated activities, or sometimes just a place to enjoy a meal and connect.

  • Grab and Go Bags

    • Angels Among Us provides Children’s Nebraska and Nebraska Medicine totes full of potentially needed items in a moment’s notice. These bags are meant to stay in the car of by the door so if an unexpected trip to the hospital is needed, or an unexpected overnight stay is required, the essentials are with them. The tote consists of a digital thermometer, hot and cold packs, a water bottle, overnight hygiene products, a blanket, Press n Seal wrap so that on the way to the hospital numbing cream can be put on their port to avoid additional discomfort, a binder for all paperwork collected, a deck of cards to help pass the time, and other small items.

  • In patient support

    • Monthly Meals- Angels Among Us visits in-patient families on the 5th floor of Children’s Nebraska one Friday evening a month to provide dinner, be there to talk, and give families a break from hospital food and being in their room. We bring an extra sense of comfort and love right to them.

    • Munchie Money- Vouchers are given to every newly diagnosed family which allows them to use credit toward any food/drink purchase in Children’s Nebraska main cafeteria to help eliminate some of the extra financial obligations an in-patient family may have.

  • Harper Hope Center

    • Our programmatic office space just blocks from Children’s Nebraska, where over 90% of all Nebraska pediatric cancer families receive car. Our strategic location allows us to be able to host emotional support programming, be close by should a meeting with a family or social work be needed, or to be a landing stop for rural families with multiple, spaced-out appointments in a day. The Harper Hope Center also has a small kitchen for snacks and quick meals and laundry services, should it be needed.
